An Inspiring Centenary Celebration for Heidelberg West
On Sunday 14 September 2025, over 100 people gathered (with more on Zoom) to celebrate a centenary of the life and worship of the Heidelberg West Methodist / Uniting / Cross Generation church.
People came from near and far, representing different generations – those from the 1950s and 60s, those from the 1970s and 80s, and those from more recent decades. Rousing singing during the service included classic Methodist hymns, as well as contemporary songs.
Short presentations covered a range of topics: the founding of the church and the first 60 years, ministers of recent decades, Sunday School through the years, social activities, the period 1986 – 2008, Milingimbi visits, the formation of Cross Generation, becoming part of the Banyule Network, hope springs, and looking to the future.
We gathered for a photo outside, and then much conversation occurred over afternoon tea and while viewing a photo loop, displays of photos, and lists of early members and ministers. The theme of the celebration was encapsulated in the words of the foundation stone “To the Glory of God 1925”.
Any of us who have close affiliation with the Uniting Church will know the constant narrative: a story about how the church is changing.
In this session, with some stories and group sharing, we will explore the idea of Church as a Swamp: the question to us is how healthy is that swamp?
Our guest speaker is Ian David, a minister in placement at Fairfield Uniting Church… He’s never done anything really dangerous, let alone had a dangerous thought… but he did find this quote… “Just as the Christian should not be constantly feeling his (sic) spiritual pulse, so, too, the Christian Community has not been given to us by God for us to be constantly taking its temperature.” from Life Together – Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
Join us for a deep dive as we assess the Church as Swamp.
