At online Messy Church on 26 July 2020, participants were asked to make food representations of people in their lives they wanted to thank God for – and then share them with each other.
There was lots of creativity in the kinds of things people used to create their messy faces.
You may (or may not) be able to recognise who they represent!

The latest contribution from the Network Virtual Choir is the beautiful Australian hymn ‘For You, Deep Stillness’, with music written by Robin Mann and the lyrics by Julie Perrin (who led a Women’s Retreat here in the Network a couple of years ago).
Please think about joining in next time we get together to sing virtually!

Many congregations in the Network regularly support local community organisations who provide food relief to families in difficult circumstances. This support has been a little harder to provide now that congregations are no longer meeting physically.

However, recently, the Rosanna Congregation put a call out for food supplies for the Emergency Food Relief Program run by BANSIC (Banyule Support & Information Centre). Members were asked to drop food off in boxes outside the Rosanna Church and when the organisers went to collect the donations, there was so much, they struggled to fit it all in their 4-wheel drive! The food supplies were delivered to a very grateful BANSIC last week.

The Heidelberg Scots Congregation also recently showed their support for BANSIC by the donation of a $1,000 emergency food voucher.

The Gresswell Congregation have been supporting Lentara Broadmeadows for many years and also recently collected food donations for their Emergency Food Relief Program.
If you would like to support either of these organisations, you can find further information at BANSIC and Lentara UnitingCare.

A few weeks ago, Network member Dr Yvonne Wells, was contacted by Australian Seniors, and asked to comment on a report they had produced called, Australian Seniors: Connectivity in the Age of COVID-19. Australian Seniors had conducted an online survey of over 5,000 people aged 50 years and over, asking how they were feeling and what they had been doing. (To access the report, click here).

The survey results were very encouraging. The vast majority of respondents (90%) said they had adapted surprisingly well to the current health crisis.

A large majority (84%) did not have to invest in new digital technology to stay connected. Over half (52%) had used video conferencing to stay in touch with their families. They also used technology to stay well informed, to provide entertainment, and to keep in contact with friends. Many used technology to keep their relationships with grandchildren going.

Almost half (40%) said that the period of lockdown had motivated them, and provided them with the time, to make efforts to improve their lifestyles — engaging in hobbies, cooking, and putting more effort into connecting with and supporting family and friends.

Close to one-quarter were actively looking for ways to support their mental health. They were doing were exactly what a mental health professional would advise them to do: looking for reliable information; engaging in enjoyable activities; keeping up their exercise routines or establishing new ones; and staying connected with family and friends — both giving and receiving support.

Unsurprisingly, about one-third felt their mental health was negatively impacted.

The Cafe of Dangerous Ideas is a group designed to give Christians and non-Christians alike the opportunity to discuss how faith (or morality) impact on the decisions we make about various issues in the world today. Each month, a knowledgeable and interesting guest speaker is invited to give a short presentation and lead a discussion.

Previously, meetings were held in the Sycamore Tree Café, but the Cafe of Dangerous Ideas is trialling an online version in July, with guest speaker Keith Banks.

Keith worked as an undercover police officer in Queensland in the 70’s and 80’s and has a fascinating story to tell. (You may be interested in an interview with Keith on Channel 10 and an article from The Age by crime writer John Silvester.)

A discussion with Keith will be recorded and posted online – and we are asking for questions to be submitted via the Café of Dangerous Ideas Facebook page that we can ask Keith during our interview.

We will let you know when the interview has been uploaded for you to watch – but, in the meantime, please send in your questions.
