Icon Exhibition
‘Peter Gunn Would Be Appalled’
22 September – 31 October 2024
10am – 3pm (Monday – Friday)
Heidelberg Scots Uniting Church
187 Burgundy Street, Heidelberg
You are invited to come and explore this exhibition of over 20 icons by Rev Dr Peter Blackwood and Rev Sandy Brodine, two former ministers at Heidelberg Scots. The images range from early saints, such as St Brendan, St Antony of Egypt and Hildegard of Bingen, to more modern subjects, such as Florence Nightingale, Mother Teresa and Oscar Romero, and many more.
Rev Peter Gunn, a previous minister of the congregation, came from a generation of Presbyterians who took so seriously the command that there should be no images of the God that this injunction also included any depiction of humans, for they are created in the image of God. He would be appalled at this exhibition, in particular on learning that not one, but two of his successors painted icons in the tradition of the Eastern Orthodox churches.
Times have changed, and our understanding of the nature of icons and how they can aid us in our spiritual connection to the Divine has grown. Come and explore!
